Beinn Dorain from Bridge of Orchy

The walk starts from the car park by Bridge of Orchy station and goes out and back. A path climbs east to the col between Beinn Dorain and Beinn an Dothaidh, then turns south along the ridge, over the North Top, Carn Sasunnaich (1,065 m), to the summit of Beinn Dorain (1,076 m). It is on path nearly all the way, rough mountain path higher up and steeper, rockier ground on the ridge.

It is 11.4 km with 952 m of ascent; allow about 6½ hours. The grade is Hard, and the climb is steep and sustained. It is the hill praised in Duncan Ban MacIntyre's Gaelic poem.

In mist the North Top can be mistaken for the summit, and the way back to the col needs care, so carry a map and compass, check the forecast and use your judgement. In winter the ridge needs ice axe and crampons. The only mapped water source is a drinking-water point near the start.

Bridge of Orchy station, on the West Highland Line, is about 300 m from the start, so you can come by train. The car park is free.
