The walk
From the car park by the Place du Marché, follow the red diamonds numbered 1. The way climbs out of town to the north and runs along the wooded slopes high above the great bend the Ourthe makes north of La Roche. It then heads west and up to Cielle, a small village on the heights, before coming back along the hillside and down into the town. Much of it is on quiet lanes and forest roads.
It is 8.8 km round with 280 m of ascent; allow about 3 hours. The grade is Easy: a long climb out of the valley and a steep way back down, on lanes, tracks and short paths.
From October to the end of January, hunts can close forest roads and paths around La Roche on set days. Check ChasseOnWeb, Wallonia's hunting map, for your date, and obey any red notice at the edge of the woods.
The car parks in the town centre are paid at meters, 1 euro an hour, with the first 30 minutes free if you press the green button; the commune's parking map also shows free car parks. La Roche has no railway station: Melreux-Hotton, the nearest, is about 15 km away.
