The walk
From the car park in Nerano, at the far end of the Sorrento peninsula, path 339 leads south along the hillside past Villa Rosa, where Norman Douglas wrote Siren Land, and down to the Baia di Ieranto, a wild bay facing Capri, with the Torre di Montalto on the point above it. Return the same way.
It is 4.4 km there and back with 187 m of ascent; allow about 1½ hours. The grade is Easy: a good path, easy on the way down; the climb back up is the effort.
The bay is in the Punta Campanella marine protected area, which gives 40 minutes down and an hour back up. It asks walkers to keep off the Punta Penna ridge above the bay, where peregrine falcons nest, and warns that the old steps down to Capitiello beach are derelict. The CAI reports the path from Termini to Punta Campanella itself closed after rockfall on the Via Minerva. A sanctuary of Athena (Minerva) once stood on Punta Campanella, and the 14th-century Torre Minerva still does.
There is a car park in Nerano, and buses from Sorrento stop on the road through the village.
