The ride
From the Pontechiesa car park in Cortina d'Ampezzo the cycle path picks up the bed of the old Dolomites railway and climbs north through the woods by Fiames and Ospitale, through old railway tunnels and over bridges, to the pass at Cimabanche (Im Gemärk), 1,530 m. It then drops past Carbonin (Schluderbach) and Lago di Landro (Dürrensee), with the Tre Cime di Lavaredo in view up a side valley, past a war cemetery and Lago di Dobbiaco, to Dobbiaco (Toblach) station.
It is 29.5 km (18.3 miles) one way with 325 m of climbing; allow about 2½ hours of riding. The grade is Moderate. The surface is mostly gravel, and the climb from Cortina to the pass is long but steady, at about 3.5%.
The Puster valley cycle paths are open from 1 April to 31 October 2026, and in winter the line is a groomed cross-country ski trail. The railway was built for the army in 1915 to 1917 and closed between Cortina and Dobbiaco in 1962.
Pontechiesa, at Via dello Stadio 1, costs €2 an hour for three hours, then €1, or €12 a day; Lungoboite is free. Bus 445 runs back from Dobbiaco to Cortina six times a day and carries bikes on a rear rack until 1 November 2026, loading at Dobbiaco bus and railway stations; no e-bikes. A bike day ticket costs €7.50.
