Garmin watches and Edge

Share your live location from your Garmin

Global Adventurer Live is a free data field for Garmin watches and Edge bike computers. While your activity timer runs, it puts you on the live map you shared from the Global Adventurer app, so the people with your link can follow you. It takes five minutes to set up, once.

What you need

  • Global Adventurer on your iPhone, with Pro.
  • The Garmin Connect app on the same iPhone, and the phone with you. The watch sends its position to the phone over Bluetooth, and the phone sends it on over its signal.
  • A Garmin that runs Connect IQ data fields: most fēnix, Forerunner, Instinct, Enduro, epix, Venu and vívoactive watches, and Edge bike computers. The store page lists them all.

Set it up

  1. Install the field

Open the Connect IQ Store, in the Connect IQ app on your phone or at apps.garmin.com. Find Global Adventurer Live and install it on your watch or Edge.

Global Adventurer Live: available on the Connect IQ Store

  2. Put it on an activity screen

A data field only shows inside an activity, so add it to the one you use: Hike, Walk, Run or Ride. Nothing appears on the watch face.

On most watches: start the activity, hold MENU (or UP) and choose Settings, then Data Screens. Pick a screen, choose a layout with one to three fields so the field's messages fit, select a field, then Connect IQ, then Global Adventurer Live.

On an Edge: Menu, Activity Profiles, your profile, Data Screens, then the same.

The menus differ a little between models. Your device's manual on support.garmin.com has the exact steps: search it for "Connect IQ data field". Some devices also let you edit data screens in Garmin Connect.

  3. Get a code from the app

In Global Adventurer, open the Map, tap the share button on the right and choose Share live location. Start sharing, then tap Share from a Garmin watch. You get a six-character code. It works for that share only: each new share has a new code.

  4. Type the code into the field

In Garmin Connect on your phone, open your device, then Activities & Apps (on some phones Connect IQ Apps), Data Fields, Global Adventurer Live, Settings. Type the code under Pairing code and save. Garmin Connect passes it to the watch when it next syncs.

  5. Start your activity

Open the activity with the field on its screen. The field says Pairing, then Ready. Press START: once the watch has a GPS fix it says Live, and your position goes to the share once a minute while the timer runs (every five minutes on older devices, which is as often as Garmin lets them reach the internet).

What the field tells you

The field saysWhat it means
PairIt has no code yet. Type one in Garmin Connect (step 4).
PairingIt has a code and is checking it with our server.
Check codeThat code is wrong or has expired. Get a new one in the app and type it in.
ReadyPaired. Sharing starts when you start the activity timer.
GPSWaiting for a GPS fix. Stand somewhere with a clear view of the sky.
LiveYour position went to the share within the last minute or two.
DelayedIt has not been able to send for a while. It keeps trying, and catches up when it can.
No phoneGarmin Connect is out of reach. Keep the phone with you, with Bluetooth on and Garmin Connect running.
PausedThe activity timer is paused. Sharing resumes with it.
StoppedThat share has ended. Start a new one in the app and type its new code.
WaitToo many wrong codes have come from your network. Try again in an hour.

Only your position, height and GPS accuracy are sent, only while the activity timer runs, and only to the share you started. Nobody is alerted by anything the field does. Privacy policy.
