The walk
The walk starts at the Forestry and Land Scotland car park at the Uath Lochans, at the end of a narrow, winding road up the west side of Glen Feshie, and goes round in a loop. A forest track runs south from the car park along the water to a junction 0.8 km out. A path then climbs through the pines to the viewpoint on Farleitter Crag, 1.5 km from the car park and about 65 m above it, where the lochans lie below among the pines and, Forestry and Land Scotland says, the view opens out over Strathspey. The way goes on along the wooded ridge, over a stretch of the Badenoch Way and the East Highland Way, and then comes back down a gravel forest track to the car park.
It is 4.1 km (2.5 miles) with 91 m (299 ft) of ascent; allow about 1½ hours. The grade is Easy: the paths and tracks are clear and the climb to the crag is short. Forestry and Land Scotland describes an easy trail round the lochans and a longer route up to a view over Strathspey; this walk is the longer one. The Cairngorms National Park Authority's Kincraig Paths leaflet gives the Farleitter Crag Trail as 4 km, allow 1½ hours, with tall trees, rock outcrops and superb views of the Spey valley and the Glen Feshie hills, and says the surface is generally firm and smooth with occasional uneven and loose sections.
The Park Authority's leaflet asks that dogs are kept on a lead from 1 April to 15 August to protect ground nesting birds in Inshriach Forest: see the notice. Forestry and Land Scotland says camping and overnight parking are not allowed in the car park, and that a Cairngorms National Park byelaw bans fires and barbecues from 1 April to 30 September.
The Uath Lochans car park is free (OpenStreetMap: no fee).
