The walk
The walk starts at the Glen Tilt car park by the Old Bridge of Tilt, about a kilometre from Blair Atholl, and goes out and back. A path and then an estate track lead up Glen Tilt, past the Jubilee Rifle Range and over a series of bridges, and on past Gaw's Bridge. A few small burns are crossed by fords or stepping stones. Beyond Gaw's Bridge the track and a path climb the hillside, up the broad ridge to the stony summit of Càrn a' Chlamain (964 m). Return the same way.
It is 25.8 km with 1,065 m of ascent; allow about 9 hours. The grade is Strenuous: the glen is about 10 km long before the climb begins, and the hill above is open and remote.
In cloud the summit area is a featureless plateau and you need map, compass and the skill to use them; in winter this is a serious hill day. The track through the Jubilee Rifle Range is closed on days of long-range shooting, and Atholl Estates publishes the dates each year; stags are stalked from the beginning of August to 20 October and hinds from 21 October to 15 February: see the notices.
The Glen Tilt car park is a pay car park (OpenStreetMap lists a fee). Blair Atholl station is about 1 km away.
