The walk

The walk starts from the National Trust for Scotland's pay car park at the Linn of Dee and goes round in a loop. A short path leads to the Linn of Dee, where the River Dee drops through a narrow chasm of rock under a stone road bridge. A path then runs east along the north bank of the Dee to the Lui Water. The line goes up the Glen Lui track and a path beside the Lui Water, past two small waterfalls under the pines, to a track at the top, and comes back along a path with a boardwalk through the pinewood to the car park.

It is 3.4 km (2.1 miles) with 39 m (130 ft) of ascent; allow about 1 hour. The grade is Easy.

The sides of the chasm are steep and the rock is wet and slippery, so keep well back from the edges and keep children and dogs close. The National Trust for Scotland, which owns the Mar Lodge estate, lists its own short walks here: a 0.8 km Linn of Dee walk and a 2.8 km Glen Lui trail, which takes in the remains of the old salmon ladder on the Lui. The Trust asks for dogs to be kept on a lead or under close control, especially in the ground-nesting bird season.

The Linn of Dee car park is a pay car park (OpenStreetMap lists a fee).
