The walk
The walk starts at the Glenmulliach Forest car park and picnic area off the A939, about two miles south of Tomintoul, and goes out and back. A forest road and then a track climb steadily past the ruined farmstead of Glenmullie, through spruce and Scots pine and over open moorland to the viewpoint on Breac Leathad, 2.5 km from the car park and 170 m above it. The Glenlivet Estate says the viewpoint has a stone plinth and view indicator, looks over the eastern Cairngorms and Tomintoul, and has tree stumps in the peat nearby from an ancient Caledonian pine forest. Return the same way.
It is 5.0 km (3.1 miles) with 170 m (558 ft) of ascent; allow about 1¾ hours. The grade is Easy: the track is firm and the climb is steady. The Glenlivet Estate's own walk is 5.5 km, allow 2 hours, waymarked with green arrows and a dragonfly logo, and adds a short loop on the way back through a high deer fence, which this line does not draw.
The estate says it is unlikely that livestock will be met on this walk. See the notice for its dog and grouse-shooting notes. A Cairngorms National Park byelaw bans fires and barbecues from 1 April to 30 September.
OpenStreetMap has no fee tag on the Glenmulliach car park. The Glenmullie Planet Trail, which the Park Authority describes as a way to discover the planets of the solar system, starts at the same car park.
