Suunto watches
Send routes to your Suunto watch
Global Adventurer plans routes along paths mapped in OpenStreetMap. The next iPhone and Android updates add a way to send a planned route, with its waypoints, to your Suunto account, from where the Suunto app syncs it to your Suunto watch. Until then, any route can be sent by file.
Where this stands
- In the next updateSending a route to your Suunto account from the iPhone and Android apps. It is part of Pro. Suunto appears in the app’s Settings once it is switched on.
- Works todaySending a route as a GPX file, and importing it in the Suunto app. It is free. The steps are below.
Send a route by file
This works with any route, and it is free.
- Plan a route in the route planner, or open one in the app.
- Get the route as a GPX file. In the planner, choose “Download GPX”. In the app, share the route as a GPX file from its share sheet. Save the file on your phone, in Files, Downloads or a cloud drive.
- In the Suunto app, open the map, tap the plus (+) button and choose the option to import a route (.gpx). Pick the file, give the route a name and save it to your library.
- Sync your watch in the Suunto app.
The Suunto app’s buttons and menus can change, and they differ a little between iPhone and Android. Suunto’s own help has the current steps: import a GPX file on iPhone · import a GPX file on Android.
How to connect (when it is in your app)
Connecting a Suunto account is part of Pro. Sending a route by file stays free.
- Open Settings and choose Suunto.
- Tap Connect.
- Sign in on Suunto’s own page and allow access. We never see your Suunto password.
- Come back to the app.
- Open a route and choose Send to Suunto.
- Send a route again and it updates the route already in your Suunto account, where Suunto allows it.
- Open the Suunto app and sync your watch.
Disconnect any time in Settings. Routes already in your Suunto account stay there until you delete them in the Suunto app, because we cannot remove them for you.
Which Suunto watches take routes from the Suunto app, and how they show them, is for Suunto to say: check Suunto’s help for yours.
What we use
When you connect, the app uses your Suunto account only to add routes to it, and to update a route you sent before. We do not read your Suunto workouts, sleep or heart rate, or anything else in your account.
What we keep, and for how long, is set out in the Suunto section of our app privacy policy. What Suunto does with your account is covered by Suunto’s own privacy policy.
Don’t have the update yet?
Plan a route in the route planner, download the GPX file and import it in the Suunto app, as above. It is free and it works today.
